Is Windows 7 being discontinued?
| Martin Rudloff
Lately, we have received frantic calls from customers worried about Windows 7 becoming obsolete and discontinued by 2016! Is it really true?
Yes, if you consider Mainstream Support - but not if you follow the embedded roadmap!
The original Windows 7, either Professional or Ultimate, is alive and well, and will keep ticking until 2024. A couple of changes are happening though. Previously, we had a total of 4 part numbers to define Pro or Ultimate, 32 or 64 bits. Now we have only 2 part numbers, Professional 32/64 and Ultimate 32/64. In addition to this Microsoft will no longer provide the Windows DVD, and expects each end-user to establish their recovery media or process.
We already migrated to a new part number and are deploying the “new” Windows 7.
OS | End of Mainstream Support | End of Extended Support | End of Distribution Date |
Win 7 Pro | 01/13/2015 | 01/14/2020 | 09/30/2024 |
Win 7 Ult | 01/13/2015 | 01/14/2020 | 09/30/2024 |
